These scams are really common on tourist attractions its really common in foods they can cost up to 100-200( about 2-10 dollars) baht per plate which is crazy expensive
These scammers think they're smart but eventually the word gets out and suddenly people stop coming to these countries. Then, the scammers complain that they don't have any business. I could list lots of countries that have ruined their tourist income, like Rio de Janeiro and Jamaica. Back in the 1970's when I worked for an airline and was also a travel agent, Rio in particular was incredibly popular Now, nobody goes there.
I get life it’s tough and it’s a 3rd world country. If the cost of living is high, simply ask for more money up front instead of playing all these deceitful games.
If the ride back to the hotel is $10, say it’s $10. Don’t bullshit me with saying it’s $2 but there’s going to be a $2 sitting fee, $3 on time fee and $3 fee because they had to use a larger vehicle.

what a disgrace to thailand. thais in my opinion are some of the nicest people. unfortunately there are many thais out to con tourists, especially chinese tourists. very shameful. there needs to be tougher laws to battle scammers.
Rule #1 Never wander like a tourist XD, when I travel to a different country, I search before or when I'm at the Hotel i do my research also when I walk pass people i just act like I belong there

The scams start the very moment your feet touch the ground in Thailand. Walk through immigration and out into the airport and the scammers are waiting to feed upon you like vultures. There are official looking booths in the foyer of the airport offering hotel rooms – they look official and respectable – but they know that you may be thinking in Western pices – so they will always ask you how much you expect to pay for a room . If you show a lack of awareness of Thai bargain prices – they will gladly charge you Western rates . They will show you pictures of 5 star rooms – and then dispatch you in a 'free' taxi – to a crappy 2 or 3 star room. Complaining to the tourist police or any representative of authority will only intensify your problems. If you have been scammed you simply need to accept it and learn from your experience and work to ensure that you don't get caught a second time. There is no recourse and to look for the matter to be resolved 'officially' could open up a whole world of pain !

Same exact thing happened to me in the Philippines. I was on my way to Bantayan and missed the last ferry by about 30 min. The locals tried really hard to scam the EU tourists who barely spoke English. I was able to negotiate a better deal for all of us, but still had to pay about double the normal rate to get where we needed to go.
Its sad that in a country that thrives a lot from tourism that you have scammers damaging the reputation of the country which will destroy their own business in the end as well as others.

I really don't understand why governments and authorities do not actively attempt to shut down tourist scams. They do themselves out of so many millions or billions of dollars in tourist income from people that just will not venture to these parts of the world when they see this kind of thing going on.

It does happen everywhere. It happened to me twice that I can think of in Paris and my ex husband had money taken from his wallet in Paris. But, it was money that I found, so it was sort of free? But, it was three times out of two entire two weeks time in Paris. Also, I was scammed at the Renaissance Faire in St. Louis. And at a carry out Pizza Hut and a taxi service and at a high end restaurant. It was really nice of you to stand up for the lady who who argued for everyone by trying to get the bus to drop everyone off at the same location. She would have been left stranded. That company needs to be reported and put out of business or the employees need to be let go and put in jail. It was not right what they did to everyone. You have evidence. And like you said, "One bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch of apples." You had a lot of nice help at the market itself, especially by the vendor showing you where the vegetarian food was located, which was FAR AWAY from his shop. He was really nice. I’m sorry about your experience. I’ve been to Thailand a few times. There are indeed many nice Thai people and beautiful places, but I wouldn’t go to that floating market. For me, it doesn’t look good at all. It looks so ordinary.
how much was the taxi rate cause u said the mini van was 100baht ? if 300-400 baht i would paid and moved on ,i went to tokyo and took a taxi from airport to city center and it was over 200usa dollar or 7200baht

There are always bad guys like this gang all over the world. But an advice for tourists is to get phone number of tourist police in Yr hand. If this shameful incident happen again, call them they will be on hand to help u eradicate this ugly people. 1155 for police help or 1672 tourism officials, and 191 patrol police

I and my wife went to bangkok in 2004 and we got scammed.. she was traumatized.. she always refused whenever i ask her to go to Bangkok again….until i convinced her to have a visit to bangkok again in 2019… and scammers are still everywhere nothing changes much..
Sorry but even i want to travel in thailand… me and my friends are afraid because its in the mindset of foreigners like us is thailand is many scammers even my thai friend says it to us that if we come just tell him because he will get us personally … and we will not get scammed..
