After the local police got there, you're the one they scrape up off the ground and take to jail. It's a good policy to not get in trouble in any foreign country, Thailand especially.
happend to me 7 years ago in thailand, was jumped by the whole street, at least 8 guys jumped me. Managed to get out to the main road where they stopped. My whole face was covered in blood, but i managed to knock 3 of them out. Its like getting jumped by a gang of 14 year old boys with muai thai training to be honest.

The term “saving face” is huge in Thailand, meaning don’t challenge a local or make them look bad in front of others, because you will shame someone and they cannot “save face” (their dignity) in that situation. Instead, if YOU are challenged, and you feel it might trigger a big “fight or flight” situation, back down and admit your vulnerability and they will come out having “saved face” and feel on top of the situation and possibly back down. Offer to buy them a beer instead, as another commenter suggested.
