I remember watching this with awe. It's now 2022 and this has never made and is pretty standard tech now lol
I miss THAT 21st century.
We "found" this on its way to trash at our company and put it in the apprentices office for a while. I spent a lot of time porting Windows 10 to it, whilst it was a regular ATX computer inside, it had proprietary expansion cards connecting the cameras over CAT5 cables, and I needed to install impossible to find drivers to make any use of the thing. Microsoft removed all the documentation and downloads from their website – all the help links would just lead to the current Surface homepage. I eventually dumped the drivers from the original hard disk (which had the original Windows Vista installation on it) and was able to install them on a 32 bit copy of Windows 10 with code signing disabled. The biggest issue turned out to be calibrating the thing after I got all the software ported – it needed a special "chess board" type of calibration plate to calibrate the camera sensors which made for the "touchscreen" – without calibration touches would be total haywire. We found online sheets of the design, and albeit printing it in different formats and on different printers (we even went to a print shop, had it printed on A0 paper), the software would refuse to accept it as a valid calibration sheet. Eventually a coworker was able to find some lost and forgotten about colleague who happened to have the original, official, calibration sheet, still sealed in its original, really old, Microsoft return address and UPS labelled shipping box, sitting next to his office desk since probably over a good decade. With that piece of treasure retrieved I was able to calibrate the thing, and we ended up occasionally using it for some of the touchscreen optimized games the Windows 10 Store had to offer – albeit them not being ideal, as obviously designed for modern tablets. Unfortunately I never found any of the old software which made use of the multitouch gestures and barcode reading functionalities. Documentation for the programming APIs was not to come by either – and even if, I was not a good programmer at the time to spend the time to come up with something custom. It being sort of slow, janky and very loud (fan noise!), I think made dispose of it some time after I left. I would have loved to save it but it being transported on a palette and me living in an apartment made that pretty much impossible.
That’s a big ass table

Lembro de como eu tinha achado isso incrível na época, agora não parece ser nada demais.
At that time, i thought the technologies shown in this video would be impossible, but 10 years later:
0:08 | 0:23 – NFC
0:43 – E-tickets
0:56 – Internet banking and payment apps
Well done, Microsoft!
11 years old video and only parts of it are true .
This video shows 200% more Zunes than Microsoft ever sold.

With surface studio, this thing is coming closer and closer to reality!

No… The name Surface was removed from this device. It is no longer called surface. It has been renamed PixelSense and the new tablets hold the name Surface
This project was not scrapped. It was renamed to PixelSense. Its actually still available.
